More About Jennifer (in her own words)…

My research interests span the areas of organizational, group, and health communication. Of specific interest to me is the relationship between spirituality and work including the legal, ethical, and interactional dilemmas posed by the expression of religious and spiritual beliefs in the workplace. In addition, I have conducted research in the areas of: emotional labor, group argument and decision making processes, collaborative learning, and organizational culture.

I grew up in Baraboo, WI and then traveled around for several years before returning to Wisconsin in 2007. I currently live in Oshkosh with my husband Karl and my three young children, Isaac, Isiah, and Abby.

More About Dr. Allred…

My research focuses on communication inhibitors and pro-social emotions as they relate to creting and maintaining relationships. Specifically, I explore the intersection between interpersonal communication and technology by examining the influence of cell phone usage on face-to-face communication (i.e., phubbing). I am interested in understanding how cell phones may inhibit or change communicative processes and in helping indivdiuals navigate the complexities of an ever-expanding digital era.  Additionally, my research examines the effects of pro-social emotions (e.g., gratitude, empathy, and forgiveness, etc.) and expressive writing in relation to overcoming such inhibitions.

Raised in the mountains of Idaho, I like to spend my leisure time outdoors. Camping, hiking, kayaking, soccer, and tennis are among my favorite activities, but I also enjoy making connections in the community through religious, political, and athletic events.

I study cultural communication using the ethnography of communication approach.  My research is focused on ways that cultural communication practices can be leveraged to help immigrants make lives in the United States.

I grew up in a small town in Minnesota.  I spend my free time with my partner, my son, and my cat.  I like to be outside as much as possible, running, biking, swimming, and skiing.

More About Dr. Palmeri…

Dr. Palmeri began his teaching career at UW Oshkosh in 1989. From 1997-2003 he served as Chair of the Department of Communication. He’s also served as president of the Faculty Senate, president of The Association of University of Wisconsin Professionals (UW Oshkosh chapter), and president of the Wisconsin Communication Association. The WCA named him “Educator of the Year” in 2004. In 2006 he was chosen to receive the UW Oshkosh Barbara G. Sniffen Faculty Governance Service Award.

Dr. Palmeri urges his students to take their citizenship responsibilities seriously. In part to practice what he preaches, for almost 10 years he produced and co-hosted (with former Oshkosh Mayor James Mather) a public affairs television program called “Commentary” for Titan-Television. He also co-hosted “Eye on Oshkosh” (with local journalist Cheryl Hentz) for Oshkosh Community Access Television. For campus radio station WRST-FM Palmeri produced and hosted “Radio Commentary.” He’s also appeared many times on Joy Cardin’s “Week in Review” program for Wisconsin Public Radio. Since 2002 he has written a monthly column (“Media Rants” ) for the Fox Valley SCENE.

Active in Oshkosh politics, Dr. Palmeri in 2007 was elected to the Oshkosh Common Council and reelected in 2009. His council colleagues elected him Deputy Mayor in 2009. He also serves on the City of Oshkosh Sustainability Board.

More About Dr. Wilkum…

Dr. Wilkum teaches and does research on the Fond du Lac campus.

She has two active lines of research.  The first is focused on understanding how people help each other in times of need.  Specifically, she is interested in how people navigate giving and receiving support in complex situations.  Some of this work has focused on the support provided to women who have experienced a miscarriage, and more recently on estranged family members.  Her second line of research is related to teaching and learning. She has evaluated the integration of technology in the high school and college classrooms, and (with a research team) developed and evaluated a taxonomy integrate high impact practices into college curriculum.

She has a very active lifestyle.  She loves to be outdoors and spend her free time making maple syrup, gardening, hiking, boating, fishing, snowshoeing, and just generally being in nature.  She is a certified yoga instructor, who just began a year of daily meditation.  She is also learning about total body workouts and dabbling in running.  She lives in Fond du Lac with her husband and two children.  They are active in their community and enjoy traveling and exploring new places.

My area of expertise is the rhetoric of environmental change, and I am particularly interested in the role of consumption and new media in shaping the way we interact with the natural world.  I enjoy bringing my passion for environmental communication into the classroom when I teach public speaking courses that focus on the theme of sustainability.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy being outdoors, baking, and spending time with my husband and two young daughters.
