Tutor

 

About the Position

  • All tutoring takes place in the Student Success Center Suite 102 during the Center for Academic Resources open hours.
  • Clients schedule tutoring through Navigate.
  • It is imperative for tutors to check email regularly in order to receive the appointment notifications and communicate with clients and CAR staff.
  • Hourly pay for tutors starts at $12.
  • Small-group tutoring starts at $12.50.

Qualifications

All applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • B+ or higher in the course you would like to tutor
  • Must have taken the course at UW Oshkosh (some exceptions apply)
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 undergraduate or 4.5 graduate credits
  • We must be able to secure a recommendation from the professor who teaches or has taught the course you would like to tutor.

How to Apply

You will need to complete and submit the Tutor Application to be considered for employment.

We recommend applying for positions several weeks before the start of any given semester as training takes place the first week of the semester. We start recruiting for tutoring positions during the winter and summer breaks, keep an eye on your student emails for active opportunities!

Applications for Fall 2024 will start being accepted in May 2024

 

 

Math Tutor

 

About the Position

  • One-on-one tutoring takes place in the Student Success Center Suite 102 during the Center for Academic Resources open hours. Clients schedule tutoring through Navigate.
  • Drop-in tutoring takes place in Swart Hall Room 017.
  • It is imperative for tutors to check email regularly in order to receive the appointment notifications and to communicate with clients and CAR staff.
  • Hourly pay for tutors starts at $12.

Qualifications

All applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • B+ or higher in the course you would like to tutor (Or tested out of the course)
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 undergraduate or 4.5 graduate credits

SI Leader

 

About the Position

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders will:

  • Attend class lectures to re-learn/reinforce course content, stay on pace with instruction, and build rapport with students
  • Plan and facilitate evening review sessions for students currently enrolled in the selected course
  • Document student attendance at sessions
  • Attend and participate in a mandatory pre-semester training
  • Attend and participate in mandatory small-group meetings for 30 minutes each week
  • Meet with the course instructor once each week to review class material and session plans
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Work cooperatively with faculty and Center for Academic Resources student and academic staff
  • Professionally represent the SI program, the Center for Academic Resources, and UW Oshkosh

Qualifications

For consideration, candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Enrollment in at least 6 crs. as a UW Oshkosh undergraduate student or 4.5 crs. as a graduate student
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Grade of B+ or higher in the course(s) you are applying to lead sessions for
  • Favorable recommendation from the course instructor (or another faculty member in that department)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as maturity, reliability, and dependability

Typical Breakdown of Hours Worked Per Week

Leaders are compensated $12.50/hr.

  • Lecture re-attendance: up to 3 hours
  • Preparing for sessions: equivalent to session facilitation time
  • Leading sessions: up to 3 hours
  • Meetings: Instructor and Center for Academic Resources Staff: 0.5-1.5 hours

Office Assistant

 

About the Position

  • Providing front desk support at the Student Success Center Suite 102 during the Center for Academic Resources (CAR) open hours by greeting and assisting all walk-in traffic and telephone calls in a cordial and respectful manner.
  • Answering student questions about CAR, tutoring, and SI
  • Assisting tutors and students in connecting with each other for tutoring sessions
  • Directing students to open areas to tutor, as needed, and maintaining overall cleanliness of Center
  • Checking and responding to phone messages and emails, as needed
  • Completing tutor request forms for students when tutors are not available
  • Entering tutor/client contract information into spreadsheet
  • Assisting tutors and clients through sign in and sign out processes
  • Helping student employees with entering their hours into HRS/My UW System
  • Maintaining organized office environment for other Office Assistants, CAR employees and students
  • Closing CAR after evening shifts, as needed (ex. ask students to sign-out, lock all doors, turn off lights and computers, etc.)
  • Ensuring all job duties are complete before working on homework/studying
  • Other duties, as assigned by CAR staff
  • Hourly pay for office assistants starts at $10 and the typical schedule is 5-10 hours/week (hours may vary depending on the needs of the department)

Qualifications

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Office 365 Applications
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 undergraduate or 4.5 graduate credits
