Hypothes.is Pilot

We are excited to announce UW Oshkosh will be piloting a new learning technology called Hypothes.is for the Spring 2023 term.

two students working collaboratively at a computerHypothes.is is a social annotation tool that will be integrated into Canvas. It will turn any page, article, or website into an opportunity for more meaningful discussion. You may be thinking, “We already have discussions, what are the benefits of this tool?” Hypothes.is is integrated directly into the content. Students can highlight a piece of text that is meaningful to them and either keep that highlight private or add a comment and begin a discussion with their classmates. Other students can respond to that comment with text, links, or images. Additionally, traditional online discussions often take place AFTER a student is done reading, sometimes many days later. This application takes the two activities and turns them into one. Students can add notes and comments to the article while they are reading which leads to more authentic engagement with the content and their classmates.

Interested in seeing more? Here are some videos that may give you a better idea of how Hypothes.is could be utilized in your course.

  • Hypothes.is Video – This vendor-created video will give you a quick peek at what Hypothes.is can do.
  • Virtual Showcase Session (Login required) – This is a recording from the UW System 2021 LTDC Virtual Conference which goes into depth about how to integrate Hypothes.is into your course and provides examples of ways to meet your learning outcomes with the tool.

Ready to try it out? We are currently accepting participants into the pilot. However, before you sign up, please know that participation in the pilot is NOT a guarantee that this application will be available past the Spring 2023 term. Additionally, participants will be expected to provide feedback via surveys and listening sessions. Additional questions regarding participation can be directed to Sarah Bradway (Bradways@uwosh.edu).
