Insurance and Risk Management Program

The UW Oshkosh Insurance and Risk Management Program was created to address the skills gap between those who don’t understand the business of insurance and yet would like a solid career in the industry. The program officially began in 2009 with 12 students, and currently enrolls more than 70 UWO students.

The program curriculum highlights the fundamentals of insurance, insurance company operations as well as property and casualty insurance products. It connects students to regional insurance company partners through company visits, career fairs and other networking opportunities. Alumna and program director Kate Manthey ’89, has 25 years in the insurance industry and is proud to help the next generation understand that a career in insurance is more than just sales—in reality, insurance is a relationship-based business.

Insurance & Risk Management | 21 credits

Gain an understanding of insurance within the larger financial services industry.

Risk Management & Actuarial Science | 21 credits

Students will aquire the core set of knowledge required to take national acuarial exams.

Insurance and Risk Management Certificate | 9 credits

The Insurance and Risk Certificate will compliment all business and non-business majors by helping students learn the language of insurance and risk. This nine-credit certificate incorporates hands-on learning with our insurance partners through industry presentations, visits to insurance campuses, various networking events, and the offer of membership to Gamma Iota Sigma. Students will become more aware of the role that risk and insurance plays in their own lives, as well as how society and businesses assess these concerns.

The International Business Certificate is open to all UW Oshkosh majors, with the exception of students in the International Economics certificate program, Global Business Minor, or Management majors with the International Business emphasis. Students who receive this certificate will have a competitive edge in the job market and be able to see the “big picture” when it comes to business issues and solutions.
