Information Systems Major

The Information Systems (IS) major prepares students to create, deploy and manage information systems to integrate all aspects of a business. Coursework includes programming, systems analysis and design, database, networking, and electives such as mobile application development. Students can develop specialized skills based on their career interests by choosing one or more of the following emphases:

Business Analysis Emphasis

Business Analysis is the process of evaluating business systems, processes, and technologies to identify areas of improvement and implement solutions to optimize business performance. Business Analysts work with organizations to identify areas of inefficiency, implement technology solutions, and improve business processes. They use data analysis, process mapping, and stakeholder engagement to understand the needs of the business and recommend changes that will improve the bottom line.

In a business analysis program, students learn about the principles and methods of business analysis, project management, data analysis, and process improvement. They develop skills in communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which are essential for success in the field. Graduates with a business analysis emphasis are equipped with the skills to evaluate and improve business systems, processes, and technologies, making them valuable assets to organizations in any industry.

Cybersecurity Emphasis

Cybersecurity refers to the protection of information and information systems from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction. It involves implementing technical and organizational measures to secure networks, systems, and data from cyber threats such as hacking, malware, and cyber-attacks.

Cybersecurity is a rapidly growing field that is essential in today’s digital world as the use of technology in businesses and organizations increases. Cybersecurity professionals are responsible for identifying and mitigating potential security risks, developing security policies and procedures, and responding to security incidents.

With a cybersecurity emphasis, students learn about various aspects of cybersecurity, such as network security, data security, cryptography, and cyber law. They gain hands-on experience in using tools and techniques to secure information systems and protect against cyber threats. Graduates with our cybersecurity emphasis have the knowledge and skills needed to secure information systems and protect organizations from cyber threats.

Computer Science Emphasis

Computer Science (CS) is the study of computers and computational systems. It encompasses the design, development, and analysis of software, hardware, and algorithms. IS graduates with a CS emphasis work to create new and innovative technology solutions that make our lives easier and more efficient.

In a computer science emphasis, students learn about programming, data structures and algorithms, computer systems, and the theory of computation. They develop skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative thinking, which are essential for success in the field. They also learn about the ethical and social implications of technology, as well as the impact of computing on society.

Graduates with our computer science emphasis are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to design and develop software, hardware, and algorithms and to analyze and improve existing technology solutions. Computer Science is a dynamic and growing field, with many exciting career opportunities in areas such as software development, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Data Modeling & Visualization

Data modeling and visualization is a crucial area of study that focuses on the organization, analysis, and presentation of data. In today’s data-driven world, businesses and organizations require professionals with skills in data modeling and visualization to help them make informed decisions based on the insights derived from data.

Through hands-on experience with real-world data sets, students learn to use Python programming language to analyze and visualize data effectively. Students also gain an understanding of data modeling techniques and tools used to design and implement data models that facilitate efficient data processing and storage.

Graduates with our data modeling and visualization emphasis are well-equipped to work as data analysts, business intelligence analysts, data scientists, or visualization specialists. They have the skills and knowledge to help organizations make informed decisions based on insights derived from data.

Custom-Designed Emphasis

A Custom-Designed Information Systems (IS) emphasis is a program tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of the individual student. It allows students to combine elements from various aspects of information systems, to create a unique program of study.

In a custom-designed IS emphasis, students have the opportunity to design their own course of study based on their interests, career goals, and academic strengths. They can choose courses and have the opportunity to engage in hands-on projects and internships to gain real-world experience.

The custom-designed IS emphasis provides students with the flexibility to create their own program of study and to focus on the areas that are of most interest to them.

Graduates of a custom-designed IS emphasis are well-prepared for careers in the rapidly growing field of information systems and technology and have a unique and customized education that sets them apart from others in the field.
