Frequently Asked Questions

Student FAQ

How will I receive information regarding commencement?

1. Commencement information and updates will be emailed periodically to all UW Oshkosh students who have registered to graduate  throughout the semester via their UW Oshkosh email account.

2. Comprehensive information will be available on the commencement web site at uwosh.edu/commencement.

3. A brochure will be sent to the families (using students’ home addresses) of UW Oshkosh prospective graduates in fall.

How long will the ceremony last?

UW Oshkosh Commencement ceremonies last approximately two and one half hours.

Will there be a space for families with small children to sit during the ceremony?

We will simulcast in Kolf room 161 beginning 15 minutes after the start of the ceremony for families with small children.

Is there a limit to how many family members and friends can attend the ceremony?

Due to building capacity and fire code, graduates are asked to keep their guest count below four people.

Which commencement ceremony do I attend if I graduate in the summer?

Summer graduates may participate in either the May or December Commencements. By completing a summer application for graduation you will automatically receive information regarding both ceremonies.

Summer graduates do not have to indicate in advance which ceremony they will be attending: we will be prepared for you to attend either one. Simply arrive at Kolf Sports Center 45 minutes prior to the respective ceremony to register.

Do I need to register for the commencement ceremony?

Once you have applied for and been approved for graduation via the Graduate Examiner, there is no official sign up to participate in the ceremony and the Commencement Team will be prepared whether a student attends or not. An RSVP is sent to graduates via email multiple times during the semester that we ask graduates to fill out if possible to assist in determining estimated attendance.

Commencement ceremony registration for graduates takes place 45 minutes prior to the ceremony in the lower level of Kolf. At this time you will receive your name card and honor cords if applicable (undergraduate only).

How do I verify that my information is correct for Commencement?

In order to verify that your information is correct for Commencement, go to Titan Web Student Service Center, select “My Academics.” In the Graduation section of the page, select “View My Graduation Status.” You will see your name as it will print on your diploma and the address to which we will send your diploma. You will also see a list of items for you to verify and enter such as your hometown and news release permission. You are responsible for entering all of this information accurately. You may update the information as needed.

I’m not able to attend my ceremony, what should I do?

Graduates who will not be attending the ceremony do not need to notify the commencement office in advance. Only those who register at Kolf (45 minutes prior to the ceremony) on commencement day will have their names read during the ceremony.

Where do I go when I arrive on Saturday?

Commencement is held at Kolf Sports Center, 785 High Avenue. Students will report to the lower level to register (maps will be posted on the doors directing students to the appropriate rooms). Guests should make their way to the upper level where the ceremony will take place.

I am graduating from two colleges, where should I go?

Students who are graduating from more than one college (e.g. Letters & Science and Business) can choose which college they would like to walk with at the ceremony. Registration cards will be placed in both line-up rooms for you.

How do I get my honor cord (undergraduates only)?

Gold (university honors) cords for cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude and white (college honors) cords will be distributed during registration on Commencement day. There is no charge for these cords.

Note: If you have not earned honors by the end of the semester before you graduate, you will not receive honor cords to wear on Commencement day. To respect the academic achievement of those graduates who have earned these honors, there will be no exceptions made to this rule.

For more information on honor cords and how they are earned, please visit our page on University Degree Honors.

Do Graduate (Masters) students receive honor cords?

UW Oshkosh does not designate academic honors at the university level for graduate students. Since all graduating graduate students must have a GPA of 3.00 or better, the UW Oshkosh Graduate Council believes awarding honors overstates what is already a higher level of achievement in comparison to undergraduate study. Further, the Graduate Council believes honors blur the distinction between undergraduate and graduate education if both were the same.

It is acceptable at the university commencement ceremony for graduate students to wear the cords or stoles of their discipline’s respective honor society.

Be in touch with your program or the Graduate Studies office if you have any questions about this information regarding honors.

Is there a rehearsal for commencement?

There is no rehearsal for commencement.

Do I need tickets for the ceremony?

No. Tickets are not required for family and friends who want to attend the ceremony. General seating is on a first come, first served basis in the bleachers. Graduates are asked to limit their guests in attendance to four.

Do we need parking passes?

Free parking is available in all University lots and ramps on commencement day.

Sections of lot 13 have been designated for individuals with disabilities and those with mobility issues. These lots require a handicap permit or special parking pass. In addition, guests without disability permits should not park in any space marked handicapped.

When will I receive my diploma?

Undergraduate Students:
Undergraduate diplomas are sent to the “Diploma Address” furnished on the application for graduation. These are mailed approximately 2-8 weeks after the official graduation date (not the commencement ceremony date). Learn more.

Graduate Students:
Diplomas and a voucher for a complimentary official transcript are mailed to the student approximately six to eight weeks after the official end of the 17-week semester or 8-week summer semester. Learn more.
