Nursing Theory Courses

Nursing theory courses in the Accelerated BSN Option are administered 100% online and cover an extensive range of healthcare topics relevant to an increasingly complex medical field. Given that Accelerated students already have a broad foundation in liberal arts and science from their previous baccalaureate studies, students complete nursing theory coursework at a rate of one credit hour per week.

On-Campus Residency

Students are required to come to UW Oshkosh to attend one on-campus residency throughout the 12-month program. Temporary housing—on campus or near campus—is available for students at a low cost.

Skills Lab and First Clinical |

After completing approximately 12 weeks of online nursing theory coursework, students come to the UW Oshkosh campus for two weeks of hands-on learning. During this on-campus residency, students complete an intensive lab component and a 56-hour clinical rotation completed at a regional healthcare facility under faculty supervision. Students are able to apply the theoretical principles of nursing by performing health and physical assessments on adult patients and providing direct care. Students are encouraged to stay on or near campus during residency for the following reasons:

  • Clinical rotations run 10–12 hours each day (including weekends). Staying near campus greatly reduces a student’s commute and increases the amount of time available for studying.
  • Schedules may change. Students are committed to the curriculum for the entire two weeks and there may be last-minute changes to the schedule depending on students’ needs.
  • There is a zero-tolerance policy for tardiness. Students must be on time for all learning sessions. Because of the compact nature of the schedule, tardiness may result in dismissal. Staying on campus eliminates traffic and weather-related delays.
  • According to former Accelerated graduates, peer interaction supports academic success. Although students have already met at Orientation  and regularly engage online, this two week residency is an excellent way for students get to know each other better. The rigor of curriculum often requires students to support and encourage one another.

Clinical Rotations

As part of the holistic nursing curriculum administered at UW Oshkosh, Accelerated BSN students are expected to complete 728 clinical hours throughout six rotations. Clinical rotations are vital in linking theory to practice and applying concepts from online coursework to a real clinical environment.

The goal is for students to complete clinical rotations in (or within 65 miles of) their home communities, though this is not always possible. Several factors influence the distance a student will need to travel for clinical rotations, including the student’s geographic location, the availability of appropriate clinical sites and nurse preceptors, the number of students in a given geographical area, etc.

Clinical rotations must occur at authorized healthcare agencies near a student’s home community under the direct guidance of qualified RN preceptors and/or UW Oshkosh faculty. Students may be expected to travel a significant distance to their clinical sites and are subject to working any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Clinical Rotation (Not Precepted)

Adult Health I

The first clinical rotation is completed during the two-week, on-campus residency. Students complete this rotation at a regional healthcare facility near our campus under faculty supervision. A designated clinical instructor oversees a group of 4–5 students caring for adults with medical/surgical health issues. Nursing care units include: cardiac, neurological, rehabilitative or medical-surgical. Students plan and manage care for 1–2 patients, complete health history and physical assessments, and perform other specific nursing skills. During the two weeks of Adult Health I, 56 clinical hours are completed on alternating days, opposite the on-campus lab experience.

Preceptor-Model Clinical Rotations

The remaining five clinical rotations are completed via the preceptor model. Students learn under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor. Clinical placements are coordinated and secured by the Accelerated BSN administrators. Students are not expected to secure their own preceptors or clinical sites. Accelerated BSN administrators seek preceptors who meet specific qualifications at appropriate agencies. For all five rotations, accelerated nursing students work the same schedule as their nurse preceptors, which may include days, evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays. Due to the compressed format of the curriculum, students need to be available 24/7 to work their preceptors’ hours.

Clinical placements in today’s nursing environment depend upon hospital employment maintained for the duration of the program.  Please contact our Accelerated Nursing Advisor with individual circumstances.  This will strengthen your application and chances of acceptance into the Bachelor to BSN Accelerated Nursing program.

Adult Health II Clinical – 112 hours over five weeks

The Adult Health II clinical rotation is completed concurrently with the Adult Health II Theory course.  Clinical units will have a combination of patients with some of the above problems to facilitate application of theoretical concepts to clinical situations. During Adult Health II, students complete 112 clinical hours over five weeks.

Obstetric or Mental Health Selective Clinical – 112 hours over four weeks

Students will be assigned to one of the specialty areas based on agency and preceptor availability. The format for this clinical is similar to Adult Health II. Students will complete 112 clinical hours over four weeks and be completed concurrently with the Mental Health Theory course. The Childbearing Families (Obstetric) Theory course is completed just prior to the start of this clinical.

Pediatric or Geriatric Selective Clinical – 112 hours over four weeks

Students will be assigned to one of the specialty areas based on agency and preceptor availability. Students will complete 112 clinical hours over four weeks and be completed concurrently with the Aging Client Theory course. The Children and Adolescent (Pediatrics) Theory course is completed just prior to the start of this clinical.

Community Health Clinical – 168 hours over six weeks

All students in the cohort complete the community health clinical rotation concurrently with the Community Health Theory course. Students are partnered with a community health nurse preceptor and complete clinical hours in a community or public health agency, such as a county health department, free clinic, home health agency or school. During the community health clinical, students complete 168 clinical hours over six weeks, which includes time spent on developing their individualized aggregate project for the agency and the patients it serves.

Clinical Synthesis – 168 hours over five weeks

The clinical synthesis clinical is completed concurrently with the Leadership and Management Theory course. It is the final clinical course in the nursing program and focuses on the student developing the leadership skills necessary to function as an independent professional registered nurse while still under the guidance and supervision of a preceptor. During clinical synthesis, students complete 168 clinical hours over five weeks.
