Requirements to Graduate with a Criminal Justice Major


To graduate, criminal justice majors must maintain an overall GPA of 2.50, a GPA of 2.75 in the major, earn a grade of “C” or better in all criminal justice courses, and meet all other university, college, and major requirements. 

New online course rotation to begin in fall semester 2023.

This rotation will allow those individuals with the appropriate transfer credits to complete the major in one year, while making it possible for all individuals to complete within one-and-half years.

**CJ312 Management of Criminal Justice Organizations is a required course for the Criminal Justice Major, but it is taught online by the Public Administration Department (PA221). When attempting to enroll, check under Public Administration (PA221).  Although the course is listed as a 200-level course in Public Administration, it will count as a 300-level course for Criminal Justice.

*As of fall semester 2021, CJ110 was dropped as a requirement. Please check with your advisor to determine whether this course is required for you.

As of fall 2021, a total of 42 credits are required to complete the criminal justice major: 27 credits of required courses and 15 credits of required electives. Please check with your advisor to determine the number of credit hours you need to graduate.

CJ 281: Elementary Statistics in Criminal Justice Research (XM) (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Math 104, 106, or 108 with a C or better; or placement into Math 171 or 201; or a grade of C or better in Math 186, 187, 188, or 189 and a grade of C or better in Math 103 (or placement into Math 104, 106, or 108).

*Note: 1) CJ 281 is designated as a USP Explore Course (Nature; Quantitative Literacy); 2) CJ 281 is designated as a Math Level II course.

CJ 396: Internship in Criminal Justice (1 – 8 credits)

Prerequisites: instructor consent; students MUST meet with a Criminal Justice faculty member before pursuing an internship opportunity. Students intending to take an internship must have completed at least 90 credits and have a 3.0 GPA in the major.

CJ 446: Independent Study (1 – 3 credits)

Prerequisites: departmental consent, and general prerequisites as described by Course and Academic Advisement Policies.

CJ 474: Honors: Thesis (1 – 6 credits)

Prerequisites: departmental consent, university honors status, and junior or senior status.
