From the Chancellor

This is a milestone issue of Engage magazine celebrating 10 years of bringing the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh to life in alumni homes around the world. This issue reflects on what it means to be a Titan through the lens of our students, faculty and staff.

I’ve now been a Titan for more than two years. I’ve seen Titans be champions. I’ve seen Titans be researchers. I’ve seen Titans be leaders, innovators, heroes and educators. I’ve also seen Titans be caring, compassionate, brave and resilient.

This year alone, I watched as our football quarterback donated life-saving bone marrow to a young girl in need-—Titans are heroes. I cheered on our UW Oshkosh staff as they turned a decline in student enrollment into a record-breaking year for undergraduate applications—Titans are innovators. I was in awe with a student who presented her research at the UWO Honors Research Symposium. Meghan Owen studied challenges faced by transgender employees and made recommendations for human resource managers to consider in their organizations—Titans are researchers.

As UW Oshkosh approaches its sesquicentennial celebration in 2021, many faculty, staff, students and alumni are engaged in an oral history project led by University Archivist Joshua Ranger. We have extensive historical information  in our archives but nothing is more powerful than listening to the stories of people who experienced UW Oshkosh.  This project is producing a rich and extraordinary account of our past that will not only allow us to appreciate  how this campus has changed, but also what hasn’t.

UW Oshkosh continues to change, grow and evolve. Every day our research takes us in new directions, our classrooms  bring out the best in students, and our hard work and resilience makes us a stronger institution. With every change,  with every year, the constant we have is that we are all Titans. That distinction holds us together while providing the launch pad for us to move forward.

This year we bring the new vision of UW Oshkosh to life through continued work on our 2016-2021  Strategic Plan. We all play a critical role in the success story of this incredible institution,  including you. Titans are.

With gratitude, Andrew J. Leavitt, Chancellor
