Gilbert “Bud” Barlow, was elected honorary captain of the 1933 Oshkosh State Teachers College football team after a career-topping season as halfback. That year the squad outscored its opponents 77-14. Having played his three years of eligibility, Barlow helped coach in 1934 as an assistant. The football star took his time at Oshkosh State Teachers College and went on to play for the school’s basketball and track teams. In his time off, the “Pride of the South Side” played for local amateur baseball, kittenball and football teams.
