Faculty praise for Ally

For a first-year student to produce dazzlingly inventive interpretations of Phillis Wheatley’s poetry and Frederick Douglass’s Narrative by putting them in conversation with Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s utopian feminism is impressive enough, but the fact that Ally did so right after the pandemic sent us all online makes her inspired act of intellectual alchemy all the more impressive. Working with Ally in person for a full semester three years later has been a gift; embodying the radical hope of Gilman’s utopianism, she transforms the classroom into a sanctuary, a home where everyone is valued and empowered.

I was privileged to teach Ally both online and in person. In both environments, she brings a strong, steady intelligence that can find common threads among our ideas and push us to follow her example toward deeper thinking. Her high standards for herself and her world will carry her far.

Ally, you’ve been a pleasure to get to know in our last semester. Even though we didn’t meet until the last minute of our undergraduate careers, we made up for it with three classes together and an unforgettable night of celebration. Cheers to your success. I look forward to getting know you more in the future!

Congratulations, Ally! I always enjoyed hearing your ideas in class; you are a brilliant thinker who I know will go far. You have climbed Arthur’s Seat and survived that dramatic first Tube ride, so you can take on anything. Best wishes!
