Matching Gifts

Make your gift go further by having your employer double or triple its impact. Thousands of companies match employee donations to charitable organizations and higher education, and the UW Oshkosh Foundation could be the next non-profit organization to reap these rewards. Not only are cash gifts eligible for matching, but also gifts of securities.

When your gift is matched, the doubled or tripled benefits are given to the same program that your initial donation supported and are credited to you for recognition purposes. Several companies match gifts of current employees, their spouses, company board members and company officers; ask your employer about eligibility.

In order to have your gift matched, just obtain a matching gift form from your employer and return the completed form with your donation to the Foundation. These forms typically are found in Human Resources, but often are also available online on company intranets.

Please check with your personnel office or call the UW Oshkosh Foundation at (920) 424-2178 to see if your employer has a matching gift program already established.

Pledges

Pledges are gift commitments typically lasting over a three- to five-year period. By carefully planning a multiyear pledge, you can make a gift that is many times larger than any single-year commitment. The pledge installment payment schedule is structured based on your preferences.

For more information about making a pledge, contact the Foundation at (920) 424-2178 or by email at foundation@uwosh.edu.

Securities

Another way you may choose to donate to the Foundation is through gifts of appreciated securities. Appreciated securities, held for more than one year, are a very attractive way to make a contribution because you may completely avoid capital gains tax and deduct the full current fair market value of your gift.

It is recommended that donors consult with a tax adviser and the UW Oshkosh Foundation if interested in making such a donation.

Gifts In Kind
Gifts-in-Kind are donated tangible and intangible assets and property which represent direct or indirect value to the University, such as real estate, notes, mortgages, limited partnership interests, royalty or copyright interests, services, art, books, equipment, automobiles, inventory, personal property and other physical assets or materials. The Foundation reserves the right to sell or refuse any gifts-in-kind.

The following information is required in writing from the donor:

  • A description of the gift (in basic terms that can be easily understood by a non-technical person)
  • The date the gift was received by UWO
  • The value /amount of the gift and how the value was determined
  • If the gift is used, its age and condition
  • The college or department  receiving the gift
  • Costs associated with accepting the gift (i.e., shipping, installation, maintenance), if applicable

Stipulations as to how the gift will be used by UWO. It is important to substantiate that the gift has actual value to UWO and will be used.

Gifts-in-Kind of $5,000 or More

If the gift-in-kind is from an individual and the value is over $5,000, the IRS requires the donor to obtain an independent appraisal to substantiate his or her charitable tax deduction (performed within IRS time requirements). The cost of the appraisal is the responsibility of the donor.

Before recording the gift, the Foundation Office reserves the right to evaluate the reported valuation. It is the responsibility of the donor to substantiate to the IRS the gift value when taken as a tax deduction on his or her tax return.
