Major with Emphases

 

Liberal Arts Emphasis

Recommended for students who wish to pursue a profession in diplomacy, international business, interpreting and translating or for cultural interests. Students are encouraged to consider a minor in European or international studies.

Requirements:

  • Completion of 33 units
  • Core Courses
  • French 315, 318, 321
  • 3 courses from: French 301, 303, 304, 308, 312, 330 or 331, 360, 400-level.
  • Electives: Sufficient courses from the department’s upper-level offerings to meet the minimum requirement.

Secondary Education Emphasis
Recommended for students who wish to fulfill requirements leading to the department of public instruction licensure for either grades K-12 or 6-12.

  • Core Courses
  • French 301, 315, 318
  • 5 courses from: 303, 304, 308, 312, 330 or 331, 360, 400 level.
  • Electives: Sufficient courses from the department’s upper-level offerings to meet the minimum requirement.
  • DPI Certification requires a period of language immersion in residence in a country in which the language is spoken.

Core Course Descriptions

French 110: Introduction to French I
This is a three-credit course presenting an introduction to French-speaking countries and their people through language study in a cultural context. The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are treated with equal attention using a text supplemented with audio and visual materials relevant to the language and culture. Weekly attendance in the language lab is required as an integral part of the course.

French 111: Introduction to French II
This course is a three-credit course, which continues building on materials covered in French 110.
Prerequisite: French 110 or placement test.

 

French 203: Intermediate Structure and Expression I 
This is a three-credit course, which continues building on materials learned in French 110 and 111. It offers some structural review, development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. This course will count toward the fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts language requirement.  Prerequisite: French 111 or placement test.

French 204: Intermediate Structure and Expression II
This is a three-credit course, which continues structural review but adds emphasis on reading and discussion of selected works of current interest. Will count toward fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts language requirement. Prerequisite: French 203 or placement test.

Retroactive Credits

Students with prior global language training are eligible to earn up to 14 retroactive credits, shown in parentheses, by successfully completing one of the following courses with a grade of B or better.
  • French 111 (4)
  • French 203 (8)
  • French 204 (11)
  • French 300-level courses (14)

To receive retroactive credits, the student must apply at the Global Languages and Cultures Office - Clow Faculty 317 when the course is completed. LEARN MORE
