Kimberly Kelling joined the journalism department as an assistant professor in 2018. Kelling has a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, a master’s degree in communication from Northwestern University, a bachelor of science in business administration and a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri.
Kelling has worked as a marketing consultant, manager and director for small-to-mid-size businesses, as well as for nonprofit organizations and startups. She spent most of her professional career as the marketing director for a financial company in Chicago.
As a media sociologist, her research focuses on decision-making, sensemaking, emotion and role conflict in journalism and communications practices and has been published in Newspaper Research Journal, Journalism Practice and Conflict and Communication Online. She has presented her work at conferences for both the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and International Communication Association, where she has received two Top Paper Awards for the Media Ethics Division and a Top Paper Award for the Newspaper and Online News Division at AEJMC.
Kelling’s course list at UW Oshkosh includes: Principles of Public Relations, Principles of Advertising and Advertising Copy, Layout and Production. Previously, she taught courses in news writing and public relations writing at the University of Missouri.
