SAFE and TSAFE Training: Fall 2020

Help make the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh a safer and more welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community by participating in S.A.F.E. Training (Students, Staff and Faculty for Equality). Participants take part in a three hour interactive workshop designed to introduce you to LGBTQ+ terms, culture, some of the challenges that many LGBTQ+ people encounter in their lives, and how to be an effective ally both in and out of the classroom.

SAFE training prepares you to become an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.  We address the ever changing terminology in the community, the messages that are generated in society about LGBTQ+ lives, the coming out process, and other skills necessary to being a successful ally.  Learning goals for this training include:

  • Being sensitive to various identities of our students, faculty and staff
  • Understanding the challenges of being asexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian, queer, transgender, questioning in a predominately heterosexual and cisgender society
  • Confronting acephobia, biphobia, homophobia, and transphobia in all its guises through educational means
  • Providing support to LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty
  • Promoting and acknowledge safe places for LGBTQ+ individuals
  • Increasing awareness of self-defined LGBTQ+ allies

After training you will receive our coveted S.A.F.E. triangle to display as a sign of support. This triangle is noticed by LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, and allies all across campus as a symbol of support and commitment to the LGBTQ+ Community. This training is co-sponsored by the LGBTQ Education & Advocacy Council, Rainbow Alliance for HOPE, and the LGBTQ Resource Center. It is in place at UW Oshkosh to identify individuals who are willing to be a source of support for people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities in our campus community.

Currently, over 1500 students, faculty and staff members at UW Oshkosh are identified as allies with a S.A.F.E. triangle on their resident hall doors, office doors or in their workplaces. The safe training could identify you as a LGBTQ+ ally and may encourage students, staff, and faculty to confide in you. It will also identify you as someone who makes their workplace or resident hall more LGBTQ+ friendly. We do not expect allies to provide counseling but instead to provide an open and affirming environment. Our main focus is to provide support for students; however, we hope that this initiative would support LGBTQ+ and questioning faculty and staff as well.
