John Mayrose, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Music, teaches composition, music theory, and aural skills. His compositions have been performed throughout the world and at festivals including the CBDNA conference, Boston Early Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, the Oregon Bach Festival, and the Slide Factory Festival in the Netherlands by, among others, Michael Mizrahi, Duo 46, Jillon Stoppels Dupree, the New Trombone Collective, Fireworks Ensemble, and Pulsoptional. His music has also been performed by several university ensembles including the Lawrence University Wind Ensemble, the IU South Bend Philharmonic, the University of North Carolina Wind Ensemble, and percussion ensembles at Truman State University, the University of Texas, Central Michigan University, the University of Kentucky, and Lawrence University. Mayrose is the recipient of the first place prize in the Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest, the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer’s Award, the ASCAP Plus Award, the Aliénor Harpsichord Composition Prize, and the William Klenz Prize in Composition. His music is recorded on New Amsterdam, Fugufish, and Classic Concert labels.

John Mayrose actively performs new works for classical guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, and guitar and electronics. He is a founding member of Pulsoptional, a new music ensemble and composers collective based in Durham, North Carolina. Recordings by Pulsoptional are on Innova and Fugufish labels.

Mayrose holds degrees from Duke University (Ph.D. Music Composition) and the University of South Carolina (B.M. Guitar Performance). Prior to joining the faculty at UW Oshkosh, he taught at Indiana University South Bend and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Music Composition at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music.
