Next Steps
for International StudentsInternational Admitted Student Checklist
All admitted UW Oshkosh students must complete the steps on the Admitted Student Checklist. In addition, international students must complete a few extra steps before classes begin.
Visa Application OR SEVIS Transfer Process
F-1 OR J-1 VISA FROM OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
Once you schedule a visa application interview, or if you receive an interview waiver, immediately contact iss@uwosh.edu to inform us of your scheduled appointment. Also, after your appointment, please inform us of the results. It is crucial that keep us informed on whether you receive a visa.
If you have entered the United States in F-1 or J-1 status already and have an “ACTIVE” SEVIS Record at another US Institution, click the box below for information about how to transfer your SEVIS record to UW Oshkosh.
Transferring a SEVIS record from another United States institution
This section is ONLY for students who have entered the United States in F-1 or J-1 status already and have an “ACTIVE” SEVIS Record at another US Institution.
You ONLY need to renew your F-1 or J-1 visa if your current one will expire before you travel through US customs again.
Those in F-1 status transferring a SEVIS Record are permitted to stay in the US while the SEVIS transfer is pending, as long as they will begin classes at UWO within five months of transferring out of the current school or within 5 months of the program completion date on your current Form I-20 or successor form, whichever is earlier.
Students who plan to remain in the United States while a SEVIS transfer is pending do NOT need to renew their visas, even if they are expired. A valid visa is only required when entering through US Customs. It is not required to maintain F-1 status while in the US.
If you have not done so already, please inform your current Designated School Official or Responsible Officer of UWO’s SEVIS School Codes:
F-1 Students
UWO Oshkosh Campus (Main Campus): CHI214F20164000
UWO Fox Cities Campus: CHI214F20164001
J-1 Exchange Visitors
Code available by contacting iss@uwosh.edu
Haven’t held your spot yet?
If not, your first step is to fill out the Hold Your Spot form. You will need your UWO student ID number to complete this step. This was included in your admission letter and email.
Next Steps for All Students
The information on this page is just for international students. There are other steps that all students must complete whether they are international or domestic students. View the Admitted Student Checklist.
Special Instructions for Transfer Students
Students transferring from another institution will need to complete a few extra tasks. Find more information about transfer student next steps.
Travel to Oshkosh
You may not enter the United States more than 30 days before your program start date unless you are transferring a SEVIS record to UWO.
We recommend that you arrive to campus at least 3-4 days prior to the start of International Student Orientation. The full orientation schedule will be provided about 2-4 weeks before the start of orientation.
The nearest airport to the UWO campus is the Appleton International Airport (ATW). Transportation options from the airport to campus are located on the airport website.
You are welcome to fly to any airport of your choosing. However, you should research transportation options from the airport to the city of Oshkosh BEFORE booking an airline ticket. Do NOT assume that there will be public transportation from any airport to UW Oshkosh.

Housing and Campus Arrival
You will receive a message to your UWO Email address stating when you can move into your permanent on-campus housing assignment. This move-in day is typically during orientation week.
For any time you will be in the Oshkosh area prior to move-in day, you must either secure temporary housing in an off-campus location (such as a hotel), or you may reserve a temporary room at the Gruenhagen Conference Center (GCC). GCC is a UWO-operated housing facility that can accommodate reservations on a nightly basis. Find information about GCC nightly room rates.
Students staying in Gruenhagen Conference Center (GCC) can travel directly there. The Front Desk is open from 7:00 AM (07:00) to 11:00 PM (23:00).
Contact Gruenhagen Conference Center
You can reserve a space in GCC by emailing the following UWO Staff Members:
Marc Nylen – Residence Life Associate Director: nylen@uwosh.edu
Allison Hinze – Event Coordinator: hinzea52@uwosh.edu
Address: Gruenhagen Conference Center
208 Osceola St.

Complete Online Orientation Modules
The UWO Student Health Center (SHC) requires all incoming international students to submit the Tuberculosis Screening Questionnaire. Depending on the questionnaire answers, students may be required to take an IGRA Tuberculosis Test. Failure to abide by this requirement could result in a hold preventing course enrollment for future semesters.
Furthermore, students under the age of 18 MUST complete the Consent for Medical Treatment of a Minor Form to receive care at the SHC. Students under 18 must complete this with a parent or legal guardian.
Finally, there is the Authorization for Exchange of Health Information. This form is OPTIONAL and would permit the SHC to exchange information regarding your tuberculosis screening with International Student Services.
Please submit all documents applicable to you to studenthealth@uwosh.edu. More information about SHC requirements for international students is located here.

Healthcare in your Home Country
We strongly encourage you to visit your doctor or healthcare provider – and your dentist – one final time before you travel to the U.S. You may find this video about the US healthcare system to be helpful.
Payments
We encourage you to consider making payments on your Student Account balance before arriving to ensure any international transfers are completed by the payment deadlines. Delays in payment, including those caused by issues from international transfers, could make you subject to late fees, finance charges, and holds preventing enrollment in future semesters.
Payment information is located on the ISS website. Please note the fees for each type of service. Wire transfer details can be provided upon request by emailing iss@uwosh.edu.

UW Oshkosh Email Update:
Multi-Factor Authentication is two-step verification process that each UWO student must use when accessing their Outlook email account. This authentication process is to better secure your email, especially when accessing sensitive information. Because passwords can be forgotten, stolen, or compromised, this additional security step helps to make your account more difficult for others to access.
The UW Oshkosh IT Department has step-by-step instructions as to how to set this up on their website here.
