About LIR

LIR Graphic Pillars

LIR is a member-directed adult learning group affiliated with the Division of Online and Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. LIR promotes lifelong learning for mature adults through a variety of stimulating opportunities.

Activities include onetime and serial classes/interest groups, off-campus day coach bus tours, tours of area businesses, attendance at performing arts events, and other points of interest. Activities are presented by experts in their field and LIR members.

The organization started in the summer of 1997, by UW Oshkosh staff who invited community members to learn more about the program. More than 100 attended and helped plan Learning in Retirement activities at UW Oshkosh. Since then, the organization has grown to more than 250 members throughout the Fox Valley area.

There are other LIR organizations throughout the UW system and country that are all independently run.

LIR is self-funded by membership fees and profits from tours. These fees support UW Oshkosh administrative support and other expenses generated by the course offerings. Member volunteers chair and serve on committees, plan and execute programs, and develop policy within UWO guidelines. Office and storage space is provided by UW Oshkosh.
