Motivational Interviewing: Foundations (Two-Part Workshop)

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach for therapists and non-therapist direct care staff. Learn practical application of foundational MI concepts and approaches that you can implement immediately. These approaches assist in efficiently and effectively developing rapport, meeting the participant where they are, and supporting mandated and voluntary participants toward behavior change.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this MI training, attendants will be able to accomplish learning objectives, as follows:

  1. Describe Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  2. Match the four concepts of the MI Spirit with their definitions
  3. Identify change talk in demonstrations and/or role-play
  4. Describe the difference between change and sustain talk
  5. Demonstrate partnership and empathy in role-play; or identify them in demonstration
  6. Describe the use of Reflections, Open-Ended Questions, Affirmations, and/or Summaries (ROAS)
  7. Apply MI approaches to participant situations
  8. Plan to Integrate knowledge & skills at work

Instructor Biography

Melinda Marasch was born and raised in Wisconsin, receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from UW-Milwaukee. Marasch has dedicated almost 25 years to her passion in helping others. She recently moved back to Wisconsin from Colorado, where she has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and continues her career as a social work/mental health trainer and consultant. Marasch specializes in clinical training, supervision and development of programs for social workers and other direct care providers. She often helps non-therapist direct care staff to be efficient, effective and therapeutic in the work they do. She has worked in residential, school & outpatient care; within healthcare (e.g. HIV/AIDS medical case managers, patient navigators), public (e.g. department of human services case workers, child support enforcement workers), and community-based organizations. Marasch is a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), and has presented numerous trainings across the U.S. on therapeutic approaches such as Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Informed Care, self-care, mental health issues, de-escalation and more.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations received 10 business days before the program will receive a full refund, minus a $35 processing charge. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than 10 business days before the program.
