The management of ethics, boundaries and confidentiality is especially critical for human service professionals. This workshop will address the unique needs and ethical challenges of older adults with dementia in home and healthcare settings as well as in the interactions with their family members. This program is designed to be interactive as participants share challenging ethical issues encountered while providing services in a variety of settings.

We will explore the ethical complexities and dynamics of advanced dementia care. The ethical dilemmas at mid-late stage are especially challenging for professionals who provide palliative and hospice care. A framework for ethical decision-making will be introduced that facilitates quality care for older adults with advanced dementia. Ethical decision-making processes will be addressed in a variety of contexts using case examples and best practice models to identify and address complicated scenarios in working with patients/clients affected by dementia. The NASW Code of Ethics will be utilized throughout this workshop as a guide in the ethical decision-making process.

Learning Objectives:

• Process the multi-dimensional issues in working with patients/clients as cognitive challenges emerge
• Navigate ethical dilemmas encountered during work with clients affected by advanced stages of dementia
• Identify complicated ethical dilemmas and strategies in serving older adults in healthcare programs and settings
• Identify the intersection of social work and technology; the benefits and risks
• Learn best practice considerations and approaches to the management of professional boundaries

Jeanne Wagner, MSW, LCSW, ACSW joined the staff of the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare in May 2005 as the director of social work field education programs. She is a licensed clinical social worker with extensive clinical, management, and administrative experience. Wagner currently teachers courses in social work and develops and presents continuing education programs covering social work ethics and boundaries, leadership and supervision, case management, and safety in the field. She has served as a mentor for cognitively disabled adults since 1981.

Wagner received her MSW from James Addams College of Social Work in Chicago and her BSW from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. Prior to her current position with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, she worked in a variety of social service settings including: child welfare, adoption, mental health, cognitive disabilities, geriatrics, substance abuse, and private practice.

In her leadership roles, she has addressed numerous issues related to professional liability and conflicts within programs, including staff complaints and a variety of legal matters. Wagner has served in the role of ombuds for UW-Milwaukee since 2007 and has 10 years of experience in quality assurance.

Cost: The cost for this program is $99 for professionals and $20 for students.

CEH/CEU Requirements: For the March 1, 2017 – February 28, 2019 biennium, 30 continuing education credit hours are required. Of those, 4 credit hours must be in social work ethics and professional boundaries.

Social work training programs sponsored by the Northeast Wisconsin Alliance for Social Worker Continuing Education will be accepted by the State of Wisconsin as continuing education hours. Full attendance at the workshop will earn continuing education hours.

• Professional Counselor CEH: The UW Oshkosh Department of Counselor Education, accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Program (CACREP) has approved these workshops for continuing education hours.
• Continuing Education Units (CEUs): Workshop participants can receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for their full participation in each workshop.

In the event of late arrival and/or early departure, amended certificates indicating the actual number of credit hours earned will be provided upon calling our office.

Student Rate: Students currently enrolled at UW Oshkosh may register at a reduced rate of $20. You must register using your UW Oshkosh email address and include your seven-digit student ID number.
