Titan Steelband Academy

For children who love making music or keeping the beat, the UW Oshkosh Department of Music is offering the Titan Steelband Academy for youth entering grades 4–12. This musical academy, divided into beginner and intermediate levels, allows students to learn, listen and play together as they are introduced to the steelpans.

Students will be exposed to many styles of music including pop, rock, reggae, calypso and more as they explore a variety of percussion instruments, musical improvisation and songwriting techniques. Each academy closes with a youth steelband performance for friends and family.

Aug. 5 – Aug. 8 | 8:30–11:30 a.m.

Final performance on Thursday, Aug. 8 from 11–11:30 a.m.

$135 for students entering grades 4-6 | $150 for students entering grades 7-12

Titan Steelband Academy teaches the basics of rhythm and drumming. Students will learn with the guidance and know-how of our faculty and student instructors.

Participants in grades 7-12 will receive an extra hour (11:30-12:30) of in-depth, hands-on instruction from UWO faculty and students.

Students will be exposed to many styles of music including pop, rock, reggae, calypso and more as they explore a variety of percussion instruments, and musical improvisation. The academy closes with a youth steelband performance for friends and family on the final day.

No prior music experience is necessary; any student who loves music may attend.

We are excited to announce the UW Oshkosh Cooperative Academic Partnership Program (CAPP) is providing a $150 tuition voucher to high school students who complete this academy.

The tuition voucher is:

  • Applicable for the 2019-2020 academic year for high school students whose schools offer UWO CAPP courses;
  • Valid for one-time use, and cannot carry over to the next academic year nor any other program on campus;
  • Non-transferable;
  • Unable to be used retroactively (previously completed CAPP courses); and
  • Not available to those who register but do not complete the academy.

CAPP courses are a convenient and affordable way for high school students to earn concurrent high school and college credit, while developing key skills for future success.  For more information about UW Oshkosh’s CAPP program, please visit

Instructor Profile: Marisol Kuborn

Born in Santiago, Chile, Marisol Kuborn received a Bachelors of Music at the University of Chile in Santiago.  She received a Performance Degree from the Conservatory of Music of Quebec-Montreal and a Masters of Music & Artists Performance Degree, where she was awarded the “Prix d’excellence” award.  While studying in Montreal she also received the Orchestral Performance Certificate from the University of Montreal.

Marisol joined the Fox Valley Symphony in 2009 where she also coaches the Youth Orchestra percussion section.  In addition, she performs with the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, Oshkosh Symphony and Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra.

She has had the opportunity to perform with other orchestras including: Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago; Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile; Orquesta de Cámara de San Luis – Argentina; Orquestre La Chapelle de Montréal, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin; Orchestra I Musici de Montreal; Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra of Pennsylvania; and Green Bay Symphony.  Some of the choir ensembles she has worked with are: The Chamber Choir of the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia; Keystone State Boychoir; The Choral Institute of Green Lake, Wis.; New Voices, Oshkosh Chamber Singers; South Shore Chorale, Appleton Boychoir to name a few.

Marisol has also played in World Music Ensembles in the US and Canada including, Marian University Steel Band; Titan Steen Band of UW Oshkosh; Island Magic Steel Drum Band; Rant & Rave Festival Steel Band of Wilmington, DE; El Extasis Percussion Ensemble and Brazilian Samba Ensemble Bloco.

In addition to teaching at UW Oshkosh she currently teaches percussion at UW-Fox Valley and Silver Lake College.

Program Fees

The fee to register is $135 per student entering grades 4-6 and $150 per student entering grades 7-12. Fees covers learning materials and snacks.
