Dementia Overview (Caregivers Track) — Ballroom A

Dementia currently affects over 7 million people throughout the United States, and the prevalence of this disease continues to grow with our aging population. Most people living with dementia continue to live in their communities and often live alone. In this session, we’ll look at the various types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, and learn how to identify common symptoms. We’ll review the ten signs of Alzheimer’s-related dementia, and we’ll also look at the associated risk factors. Finally, we’ll discuss the benefits of early detection and diagnosis and look at some of the available informational resources.

Dementia: Successful Communication Techniques (Caregivers Track) — Ballroom A

We all find ourselves interacting and communicating with people living with dementia in various settings – in our family, in our community, in health care settings, and in social and business settings. Successful communication can often become very challenging. Understanding the underlying needs and messages that people are trying to communicate can help make our interactions much more effective. We’ll discuss specific techniques including validation, re-direction and controlling the environment. The importance of using person-centered approaches will be considered. Finally, we’ll also discuss cross-cultural barriers to communication with people living with dementia.

From the Inside Out: Simple Steps to Transform Your Work Life
Presented by: Hope Zvara

Feeling disconnected from your job, but more importantly, disconnected from your purpose can put out any “fire” you feel in your daily life. In order to feel fulfilled at your job, you need to tap into the little changes for BIG results – mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Through her own life challenges and tragedy, Zvara has cultivated tools, tricks and techniques she calls the three B’s – Breath, Body and Belief – to help others purposefully excel in the workplace and in life. Zvara will guide you through the mechanics of breathing along with specific breathing techniques, and discuss new research behind the power and art of breathing. She will share her knowledge on the importance of body posture, movement and core health. Finally, Zvara will explore the concepts of mindset and mindfulness as you move together through everything that has brought you to where you are at this moment.
