“Efficacy of Local Refugee Integration Programs”

Yessra Sankari

Graduate Student, Public Administration

Abstract

Local communities often utilize refugee integration programs, such as the Refugee School Impact and Refugee Youth Mentoring grants, yet the funding and efforts put forth are not always evaluated for the programs’ effectiveness. Since refugees come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, the assistance with integrating refugees into the community may vary among the different populations. This study will examine the following research question: To what extent does the Refugee Youth Mentoring (RYM) program affect participant integration? To assess the effectiveness of the program on refugee integration, surveys and focus groups were conducted regarding education, social bonds, health, and language/cultural knowledge. Objective data was reviewed, such as high school graduation, GPA, and employment rate. The findings of this research can help determine the effectiveness of refugee integration funding, identify additional areas of opportunities for refugee development, and could provide insight for areas with denser refugee populations.
