The research, study, and performance of Barnets Vaardag Op. 42 by Agathe Backer-Grøndahl

Abstract

I have researched the song cycle Barnets Vaardag, or Child’s Spring Day, Op. 42 by Norwegian composer Agathe Backer-Grøndahl. The process of preparing this project included researching Agathe Backer-Grøndahl, practicing the chosen pieces, and learning the proper diction of the language for performance. My goal in researching and performing this work and composer were to expand my knowledge of the Norwegian language and music, as well as give light to an important female composer of Scandinavia. I have prepared this music for my senior recital, April of 2023, as a part of completing my degree in Music Education. Backer-Grøndahl’s music is rarely performed, and this project will add a unique aspect to my repertoire. As a music educator, my hopes in learning about Backer-Grøndahl were to be able to include her music more often for my future students. I also decided to work on this cycle and complete this research for the opportunity to learn to pronounce a language outside of those traditionally studied and relate the diction techniques I have learned to them. I have studied diction in depth in the course given at UW Oshkosh and I will be using my knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet from class to transcribe the Norwegian lyrics.
