Validation Study of the Auricular Surface of the Ilium

Vanessa Kaus

Sophomore, Anthropology

Abstract

I conducted a validation study of Buckberry and Chamberlain’s aging method that utilizes the auricular surface of the ilium. The original researchers proposed that this method could estimate an age range with 60% accuracy of the age being within one standard deviation. After scoring 256 iliumia on several categories and calculating composite scores, I had found I could estimate age with 64% accuracy of one standard deviation. However, this may simply be because of how wide the age ranges were. In addition, I had found that, as an observational study, my scoring was highly subjective and I did not always agree with myself; yet, overall, I had found the method to work at about the same accuracy as the original testers.
