Requirements for the Major (for students who declared prior to Fall 2014)

For students who declared prior to Fall 2014, the philosophy major consists of a total of 36 credits, unless the student is required to (or chooses to) take Phil. 475; in that case, it consists of 37 credits, but the same number of classes (see note below).

  1. All majors must take the three foundational courses:
    PHIL 101: Elementary Logic
    PHIL 105: Ethics
    PHIL 109: Introduction to Philosophy
  2. In addition, all majors must take all of the following courses:
PHIL 301: History of Ancient Philosophy
PHIL 305: History of Modern Philosophy
PHIL 475: Philosophy Capstone (NOTE: majors must take PHIL 475 only if they declared their major 2013 or later; otherwise they may take it as an elective). This is a 1-credit course taken with any 300- or 400-level course of the student’s choosing (after having earned 21 credits towards the Major). The student pursues independent research within the context of the chosen course, and shares that research at a Capstone Celebration with other students at the end of the semester.
  3. And all majors must take one of the following courses:
    PHIL 309: Contemporary Philosophy
    PHIL 319: Theory of Knowledge
    PHIL 422: Philosophy of Language
  4. Finally, majors who are required to take PHIL 475 (see 2. above) must take 15 additional philosophy credits of their own choosing for a total of 36 credits. Those not required to take PHIL 475 must take 18 additional philosophy credits of their own choosing (which may include PHIL 475).

Requirements for the Minor (for students who declared prior to Fall 2014)

The philosophy minor consists of a total of 24 credits. Because the courses are offered frequently, it is easy to add a minor to any major without increase in total credit load.

  1. All minors must take the three foundational courses:
    PHIL 101: Elementary Logic
    PHIL 105: Ethics
    PHIL 109: Introduction to Philosophy
  2. In addition, all minors must take one of the following two courses:
PHIL 301: History of Ancient Philosophy
PHIL 305: History of Modern Philosophy
  3. Finally, all minors must take 12 additional credits of their own choosing in philosophy for a total of 24 credits.
