Biography

As an undergraduate, Dr. Lattery attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN (1984-1986) and Bethel College in St. Paul, MN (1986-1988). As a graduate student in physics at the University of Minnesota (1990-1996), he was a member of the CLEO Collaborationat Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). In 1996, Dr. Lattery earned a Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Minnesota based on experimental studies of the b-quark. He also earned a Masters degree in education from the University of Minnesota (Summa Cum Laude). In 1997, he joined the Department of Physics/Astronomy at the  University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Dr. Lattery lives in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with his wife and two children.

Dr. Lattery’s research interests are elementary particle physics, physics education, and the history and philosophy of physics. He is currently a member of the AntiProton Annihilations at Darmstadt (PANDA) Collaboration. Lattery is also engaged in a variety of basic education research studies on student model formation and development in introductory physics. He has published in such diverse peer-reviewed journals as Physical Review Letters, The Physics Teacher, School Science and Mathematics, Physics Education, and Science & Education. Lattery is the author of Deep Learning in Introductory Physics (2017).

Dr. Lattery received the 2021 AMTA Hestenes Award for Exceptional Contributions to Modeling Instruction. Dr. Lattery is Past-President of the Wisconsin Association of Physics Teachers (2017-2018) and President of the Wisconsin Modeling Teaching Association. For excellence in teaching, Lattery was named UW-System Wisconsin Teaching Scholar and Wisconsin Teaching Fellow. Recent professional positions include: President of the Director of the Modeling Physical Science program, Chair of the American Association of Physics Teachers Committee on the History and Philosophy of Physics, and most recently, Graduate Program Coordinator of the Masters of Science in Education (MSE) Physics Track program. He has served as a National Science Foundation panelist for the TUES, MSP, and STEM+C programs.
