Graduate Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Grant

The MPA student, Crystal Soderman (in collaboration with Dr. Samantha Larson) has won the 2019-2020 Summer Research Grant from the UW Oshkosh Office of Student Research and Creative Activity. The Summer Research Grant provides a $3,000 scholarship to the student and up to $550 for supplies and expenses for full-time research (40 hours/week) during the eight-week summer.

Crystal Soderman’s project is titled, “The Impacts of Cultural Penetration on Alternative and Renewable Energy Policy.” This is a brief description of the project: “Despite increasing concerns over climate change and changing cultural values, the United States has been slow in adopting national policies for the use of alternative and renewable energy. This study will examine the relationship between changing American cultural values and their impact on the adoption of alternative and renewable energy policy. When new values successfully penetrate a culture, they have achieved cultural penetration. Previous studies have illustrated that one method of measuring cultural penetration is through the written works of a culture. This study utilizes the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) databases to measure cultural penetration. It will test the relationship between cultural penetration and the adoption of alternative and renewable energy laws by analyzing the use of the terms “alternative” and “renewable” energy in written works.” Congratulations, Crystal!

The MPA student, Cheri Stoffel (in collaboration with Dr. Anna Filipova) has won the 2013-2014 Graduate Student and Faculty Collaborative Research grant. Cheri Stoffel’s graduate thesis project focuses on an assessment of university students binge eating and its impact on work and school productivity. She was awarded with a stipend of $3,000 and $500 for supplies and expenses for the project period. Congratulations, Cheri!
