The purpose of Independent Study is to allow a student to explore in-depth topics of scholarly interest which are not attainable through University coursework. In Radio TV Film, a student who wishes to complete an independent study should prepare a syllabus (in collaboration with the instructor) for approval by the department.

Independent Study offerings are not to be used as a substitution for General Education requirements.

Before registering for an IS course, students must obtain the proper contract form from the department office, complete it and secure all necessary signatures.

Students may count no more than 12 credits in IS combined toward the 128 required for graduation. General prerequisites: Junior standing (60 credits) or above, preparation in the academic area, and grade point average of 3.0 or above.
