There are many ways involvement in the new Titan Thunder Marching Band can have a positive impact on a student’s experience at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. There’s the camaraderie, the teamwork, the memories, the excitement of game days, chances to travel and the opportunity to show off musical chops—to name a few.

But there also are financial benefits for marching band members.

Here’s a look at four different ways taking part in the Titan Thunder can result in scholarship money to help make life at UW Oshkosh—and beyond—a little easier.

1. Titan Thunder inaugural year scholarships: If there’s one thing to know, it’s this: Every member of the Titan Thunder will receive scholarship money for each year in the program. For more information, contact the Titan Thunder staff at marchingband@uwosh.edu or (920)424-7016.

2. Titan National Scholar Program: This opportunity is for first-year and transfer students coming from outside Wisconsin and helps knock down the out-of-state tuition cost. All majors are eligible and UWO does not cap the number of students earning the Titan National Scholar award.

3. Ed Karrels Continuing Music Performance Scholarship: This scholarship, established by alumnus Ed Karrels ’97, is for full-time undergrads majoring in something other than music. (A music minor is OK.) There’s a minimum GPA requirement and other qualifications, but the award is for $8,000. More information is available here.

4. Titan Thunder Cooperative Academic Partnership Program (CAPP) scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to high school CAPP students admitted to UWO as incoming freshman for summer or fall 2022 who plan to join the marching band. Students heading to any of the three campuses are eligible to apply—but students must apply during their senior year of high school. More information, including other qualifications, is available here. The deadline to apply is May 6.

Momentum is building

The Titan Thunder’s historic debut is planned the first home football game of the 2022 season, when Titans host East Texas Baptist University on Sept. 3.

Applications for students to join the marching band are open until July 1. Students from UWO’s three campuses are eligible. Enrollment also is open to any student enrolled at a postsecondary institution, meaning current students at Ripon College, Lawrence University, Fox Valley Technical College and beyond can join the band through a special admission process.

Open positions include piccolo, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, trumpet, mellophone, trombone, baritone, sousaphone, marching percussion, color guard and baton.

Titan Thunder virtual information sessions are held every other Thursday in spring and summer. These Zoom meetings include audition and membership information, a chance to meet the staff and student leadership, the sharing of ideas for fall and more. Sessions are at 8 p.m. April 28, May 12 and 26, June 9 and 23, July 7 and 21, and Aug. 4 and 18.
