The deadline to apply for the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s new Titan Thunder Marching Band may have come and gone, but there are still opportunities to get involved this fall.

First things first: Did you intend to apply for the marching band but miss the deadline? You can still submit an application as an instrumentalist, color guard member or twirler—just do so as soon as possible. Joseph Scheivert, director of athletic bands at UW Oshkosh, said to ensure a new addition gets a spot on the field come Sept. 3, he’ll need their information by July 15.

There are a number of other roles students can play—and also earn class credit, gain valuable resume-building experience and be part of the establishment of a new marching band community at UWO without ever picking up an instrument.

Among them:

  • Equipment crew/field tech: Assist with logistics, setup and operation of the band’s equipment during rehearsals and game days and other events. This is open to all but students must be at least 21 years old to drive an equipment truck.
  • Uniform assistant: Aid in designing and implementing the organizational system for nearly 250 uniforms, initial fitting and game day distribution, and tracking and upkeep of uniforms.
  • Music librarian: Manage the digital and print music libraries for both the Titan Thunder and the Bolt Band (pep band), prepare parts for distribution on mobile devices, copy/scan as needed for staff and student use.
  • Media team: Produce graphic, photo and/or video content for Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok, recruiting materials, video yearbook, archival footage of performances and more.
  • Trainer: Develop recommendations for preseason conditioning, daily stretching and warmup routines for the band, monitor and support the physical wellbeing of performers.

Students with questions or interest in any of these roles should contact Scheivert at marchingband@uwosh.edu.

The Titan Thunder’s historic debut is planned the first home football game of the coming season, when Titans host East Texas Baptist University Sept. 3.

The band’s first wave of students, including section leaders and members of the drumline and color guard, will gather Aug. 19 for the start of preseason band camp. The remaining members arrive Aug. 21 and camp runs through Labor Day weekend.
