Students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campuses at Fond du Lac and Fox Cities are getting a boost as they start the fall semester.

Start Strong, a campaign that is an offering of New Student Programs, is intended to support students as they acclimate to beginning college. The program kicked off at orientation and throughout Welcome Week and runs for the first four weeks of the semester.

UW Oshkosh, Fox Cities campus students start the year off right at the Welcome Back Bash.

“Our staff is recognizing that our student populations need more support transitioning into college now than we’ve experienced in the past,” said Jill Bangart, new student program coordinator/academic adviser at the Fond du Lac campus. “These programming efforts are a way for students to get connected to our campus communities early on in the semester, setting the stage for them to continue to access resources and build skills to help them persist. It is also a great way for students to meet new people and start establishing their own network of support.”

Start Strong is an idea developed by Bangart and Jackie Connell, new student event manager at the Fox Cities campus. They’ve expanded on the smaller scale program they offered last year and intend to continue building the program for future semesters. Start Strong is a collaborative effort between campus Solution Center teams, academic support resources and faculty.

Start Strong “passports” are available to students as they navigate workshops and events to prepare them for the start of their college careers. After attending five events, they can turn in their passports to their campus Solution Center by Oct. 7 to be entered to win prizes.
