Just when you think you’ve seen all the ways members of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh community can help make the world a better place—along comes Cathy Porter.

Porter, who graduated from UW Oshkosh with an elementary education degree in 1999, is the subject of a story from The Post-Crescent in Appleton. She is the driver of a walk-to-school program at Jefferson Elementary School, where she’s worked for 25 years and is now dean of students.

Dubbed a “walking school bus,” Porter walks a route to and from school each day in an effort to help students who may be at risk of missing school. It’s something she’s been doing for five years. You can learn more about it here.

While at UWO, Porter played on the Titans soccer team in 1994 and 1995. Her husband, Shayne Porter, earned an elementary education degree from UWO in 1998.
