The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing launches a new academic year continuing its proud tradition of excellence.

Among many achievements, we celebrate the five-year accreditation of our simulation training center by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, an international body that accredits medical simulation centers around the globe, in recognition of excellence in teaching and education. UW Oshkosh is believed to be the only nursing school in Wisconsin with this distinction.

During my first year as dean, I’ve had the privilege to learn about the outstanding efforts of faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college whose primary focus is training the next generation of nurses.

The latest issue of CONtact magazine highlights the opportunity to leverage telehealth technology and innovative teaching and learning technologies including virtual reality, to reimagine our instruction and reposition ourselves to lean into the future of personalized health and education. To that end, we are conducting a $2 million lab modernization campaign to help provide our students with the latest technology available.

You may have heard that we welcomed an inaugural cohort of nurses and family nurse practitioners into our new psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner programs. Led by Bonnie Nickasch, a dual-certified family and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and Shelley Strojny, certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who works with children and adolescents, the programs will help fill a critical need for trained professionals.

We are further expanding our footprint in caring for older adults in our communities through strategic partnerships that prepare our graduates to be leaders in the field. Read how our senior students collaborated with Fox Valley Memory Project to support individuals and families impacted by dementia.

Rounding out the issue are intriguing News and Notes, details on a long-standing nursing scholarship and CON’s impressive Points of Pride.

As dean, one of my goals is to communicate and celebrate the critical roles that our faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college play in our success.

I look forward to sharing more gratifying news in the upcoming year.

Seon Yoon Chung,
Dean of the College of Nursing
