New technology at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing is helping train the next generation of nurses. In the latest issue of CONtact magazine, we explain how state-of-the-art equipment is being used to prepare for modern workplaces.

“Technology is infused into almost every aspect of healthcare,” said Polly Anderson, senior lecturer and simulation coordinator.

Students for years have gained hands-on experience in the CON Simulation Training Center. But recent investments in new technology—including virtual reality—have expanded what’s possible in nursing simulation. To remain a leader in nursing education, a lab modernization campaign is underway to update equipment and invest in new technologies.

Two new UWO programs have begun to address a shortage of mental healthcare professionals in Wisconsin. This fall, CON launched a bachelor of science in nursing to doctor of nursing practice (BSN-DNP) psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner emphasis and a new post-graduate certificate for current family nurse practitioners.

The 2023 issue also includes stories on a collaboration with Fox Valley Memory Project that allows future nurses to gain exposure to those experiencing dementia and their caregivers as well as memory care resources in the region; and a feature about longtime nursing scholarships from the 40 & 8 local chapter, with the latest recipients’ honoring their grandfathers’ military service.
