The less-than-two-week old baby peregrine falcons living on campus at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh need names.

The two falcons were born in late May to Hondo and Deborah, two adult falcons that have been living on top of Gruenhagen Conference Center since January.

A poll with nearly 40 name options has been set up and can be found by visiting https://portal.housing.uwosh.edu/apps/FalconPoll/. The names that are the top two vote-getters will be selected for the baby peregrine falcons, said Assistant Director for Residence Life Victor Alatorre.

Voting will be open through Thursday, June 16. Following the naming of the falcons, Greg Septon, a peregrine specialist with the Wisconsin Peregrine Society, will band the young peregrines.

Using the proper safety precaution measures, the young will be removed from the nesting box, taken inside and banded, which is a way for experts to better understand the peregrine’s life history, how long they live, how many young they produce and where they travel, Septon said. Banding the falcons also helps manage their populations.

The young falcons are expected to stick around the nest at UW Oshkosh until they are able to hunt on their own, which usually occurs up to about six weeks after their hatch, Septon said. This means the falcons could live in their nesting box on top of Gruenhagen Conference Center until early to mid July.
