This day in UW Oshkosh history – Jan. 6, 1899: The all-male Philakean Society is founded. Philakean, which means lovers of argument, is formed for what the members feel is a need for literary and forensic training. Membership was limited to 30, and male faculty members were regarded as honorary members. The Society later helped initiate the founding of Alethean, an all-women’s society, in the spring 1900.
