The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will host its 51st midyear commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 19.

More than 900 undergraduate and more than 135 graduate students will be recognized as UW Oshkosh’s newest graduates—bringing UW Oshkosh’s alumni base to more than 88,000.

The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. at Kolf Sports Center, 738 High Ave., on the UW Oshkosh campus. The ceremony will last about two hours.

UW Oshkosh Chancellor Andrew Leavitt will confer diplomas to the graduating students. U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman will offer greetings from the state and Michael M. Grebe will represent the UW System Board of Regents. Following the formal ceremony, a reception for faculty, and new alumni, their parents and guests will be held in Kolf’s lower level.

This year’s faculty commencement speaker is Judith Westphal from the College of Nursing. Lauren LaDell, who majored in communications and minored in radio-TV-film, will offer remarks on behalf of the graduating class.

“It is a really big honor to represent everyone,” she said.

Community leader Walter Scott (Scotty) Jr. will be recognized with a Chancellor’s Medallion during the ceremony. The recognition is awarded to individuals the Chancellor deems deserving because of their significant contributions to the University, the region, the state and/or the nation.

The graduation ceremony is, of course, the culmination of a lot of hard work and success, but there are also many other smaller celebrations on and off campus in the days leading up to the formal ceremony. Senior breakfasts, exhibitions, pinning and hooding ceremonies, banquets and more allow students from all four UW Oshkosh colleges to commemorate their commencement in the days surrounding UW Oshkosh’s formal ceremony.
