For just 50 cents per scoop, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students, faculty and staff enjoy a special ice cream treat at Reeve Union from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Tuesday throughout the summer.

The opportunity to come together as a campus community is priceless.

“The student-run Summer Scoops project is all about community,” said Missy Burgess, associate director for student involvement. “It’s a fun campus tradition that students and employees get excited about.”

The ice cream also attracts little ones from the Children’s Learning and Care Center on campus.

For the past five years, “celebrity” scoopers from departments across campus have dished up between 12 and 18 gallons of ice cream per week.

Reeve’s student marketing manager Frankie Rabas has the enviable job of picking the flavors.

“My process for picking the flavors isn’t too complicated, but it is strategic,” she said.

Each week, vanilla is a constant for those who must avoid allergens.

“I also pick another milder flavor, usually something fruity like strawberry cheesecake or peach,” she said. “The other two flavors are usually chocolate/cookie/brownie-centered … something a little more sweet for the kiddos who come through or for the faculty/staff who would like a sweeter option.”

One of the most popular flavors is monster cookie.

“People just go crazy over it,” Rabas said. ” So I think I ordered monster cookie four times throughout the summer.”
