Longtime University of Wisconsin Oshkosh professor Kenneth Grieb died July 13.

Kenneth Grieb

Grieb began his teaching career at UW Oshkosh in 1966 and in 1968 began serving as the international studies coordinator and faculty adviser for the award winning UW Oshkosh Model United Nations Team. His willingness to mentor students led the organization to 34 years of consistent ranking as one of the Outstanding Delegations at the National Model United Nations, which involves 5,000 students from 220 universities in 48 countries on four continents.

“I will always remember Ken as one who was truly dedicated to academic excellence and a student-centered approach to teaching and learning,” Interim Provost John Koker said. “He will be missed.”

From Grieb’s obituary:

In recognition of his scholarship, Grieb held both the John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship and the SNC Corporation Professorship in International Relations at UW Oshkosh.

Grieb authored more than 50 articles in professional journals and chapters in scholarly volumes, an equal number of entries in scholarly reference works, and well over 100 book reviews in professional journals. Grieb also served four terms on the Board of Editors of The Historian, and previously served on the Board of Editors of The Americas.

Grieb received multiple teaching awards, including the Regents Teaching Excellence Award for 1998, an award which is presented by the Board of Regents to a single faculty member selected from the 3,300 faculty teaching on the 13 comprehensive university campuses of the University of Wisconsin System. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named him Professor of the Year in 2004.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Most Blessed Sacrament-St. Mary Catholic Church, 619 Merritt Ave., Oshkosh. The burial will take place at a later date at the St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Cemetery, Cheektowaga, New York.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Kenneth J. Grieb Professorship Fund, which was established in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation in 2016 by alumni of the international studies department and the Model United Nations program. The professorship provides the coordinator of international studies with funding for professional activities in addition to and as a supplement to their regular salary.
