The community is invited to learn about the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Gamma Phi Beta at an open house on Oct. 12 from 1 to 8 p.m.

The sorority has been on the campus for almost 30 years, living up to the four core values of love, labor, learning and loyalty.

Natalee Kasmiskie, public relations vice president of Gamma Phi Beta, said the sorority decided to hold its first open house so that everyone in the UW Oshkosh community could see the house and learn about what the sisterhood does.

“We open it to friends so that they can learn where we spend our time,” she said. “We open it to professors and faculty so they can see what their students are up to. We open it up to other Greeks so that they can see how Gamma Phi Beta operates.”

The Gamma Phi Beta sisters have donated time and money to organizations such as Camp Fire USA, an organization that provides fun learning activities for children; the local Big Brothers Big Sisters, a volunteer-based mentoring program; and the Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser, a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

People who attend the open house will get a tour of the house, historical information, the background of the sorority and their philanthropy, and will learn about the beliefs of the sisterhood.

“We have a very close sisterhood and we all have very diverse backgrounds,” Kasmiskie said. “This leads us to incredible bonds through our values and a passion to connect to the University as a whole.”

By inviting people in, the sisterhood hopes to clear up any misconception about what it means to be a part of a sorority.

“I’d love for people to see that Gamma Phi Beta on our campus is not a stereotypical sorority,” Kasmiskie said.

The Gamma Phi Beta house is located at 545 Algoma Blvd. For more information about the sorority, visit www.uwogammaphibeta.com.
