One of Seven State Students Honored by National Organization
Campus Compact, a national organization of college and university presidents, has honored UW-Fond du Lac student Kathleen (Kate) Bauer as a 2012 Newman Civic Fellow. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards recognize inspiring college student leaders who have worked to find solutions for challenges facing their communities.
Bauer is a second year honor student and a founder of the UW-Fond du Lac Habitat for Humanity student organization. She was nominated by Ray Cross, chancellor of University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension, and was one of 162 students from 32 states chosen for the recognition.
No ordinary student, Bauer is the mother of six children, three of whom attended UW-Fond du Lac. She was inspired to resume her education after losing her job in 2010.
The campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity assists with house builds and helped raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County by participating in the Shantytown event. This spring, the UW-Fond du Lac Habitat for Humanity chapter traveled to Georgia for the collegiate “Blitz Build.”
As the president of the Multicultural Club, Bauer also led a community-wide fundraiser to support a scholarship. She serves as the student representative on three faculty committees as well. She was featured in a recent UW-Fond du Lac Report to the Community.
Campus Compact’s Newman Civic Fellowships honor students who are demonstrating a personal commitment to creating lasting change for the better in their communities. Through service, community-based research, and advocacy, the 2012 class of Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves and the root causes of some of the most pressing social issues that challenge us all.
Other Wisconsin students honored included Amy Diestler, St. Norbert College; Amy Ramirez, Mount Mary College; Binta Sidibe, UW-Superior; Sydney Nelson, UW-Whitewater; Vanessa Hope, UW-Parkside; and Spencer White, Madison Area Technical College.
“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world,” notes Campus Compact Board Chair James B. Dworkin, chancellor at Purdue University North Central.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of almost 1,200 college and university presidents—representing some 6 million+ students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education, that is, to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility. UW-Fond du Lac is a campus of the UW Colleges a part of the University of Wisconsin System comprised of 13 freshman-sophomore campuses and UW Colleges Online that offer an associate degree in arts and science and prepare students of all ages and backgrounds for baccalaureate and professional programs.
