Students Encouraged to Pursue Research and Creative Projects

Two University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac students have been awarded $500 stipends as part of the UW-Fond du Lac Student Research Fellowship program.

Elaina Stukenberg, Campbellsport, will do research on “Understanding Miscarriage Support: In Women’s Words” under the guidance of Professor Kristi Wilkum, communications. Stukenberg will assist in the transcription of data from interviews and with recruiting women who have experienced miscarriage in the previous 12 months.

The purpose of the study and the interviews is to describe women’s support needs after miscarriage and how these vary over time; identify specific behaviors that women view as supportive and unsupportive in the context of miscarriage; and examine how different types of support behaviors are perceived in different relationships (such as husband vs. friend) and at different points in the recovery process.

Amy Scherg, Fond du Lac, will participate in research on “Gender and Law” under the guidance of Professor Eric Boos, philosophy. The purpose of this research is to study the effects of the normative content of laws governing gender and sex in American society.

Scherg recently attended a UW Law School Symposium on Law and Gender in Madison. She plans to develop a set of criteria to help legislators work toward a non-normative legal language of gender and sex, and publish it in a law review article in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s rendering of the California Proposition 8 case.
