Radio TV Film students from the Oshkosh campus of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh attended the annual student conference of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association in Middleton and came away with 16 of the 74 awards for student media work. There were 286 entries in the competition.

UWO’s Titan TV swept the TV category for general entertainment program with first place going to an episode of Curtain Call, second place to an episode of Wired Up and third to an entry from the series UWO in 30.

Titan TV also took first and third place for TV sports play-by-play. First place went to a football broadcast vs. UW-Stout and third to a volleyball match-up against UW-Stevens Point.

The station also took first and third for TV public service announcements or commercials with first going to the informational piece The Radio TV Film Story and third to a segment promoting the website for the Curtain Call program.

UWO’s WRST-FM also took first and second place in the radio category for long-form, non-news production. First place was for the segment Rich the Barber, a profile of an area barber who’s an ex-con, and second went to The Motherhood Affidavits, a conversation with a UW Oshkosh author.

Other awards won by UWO include:

  • Second place/radio sports programming/non play-by-play for an interview with UWO basketball player Jack Flynn
  • Second place/radio sports play-by-play for the NCAA DIII Men’s Basketball Semi-Final when UWO faced Ramapo College
  • Second place/TV/public affairs for Let’s Talk About Arts
  • Third place/radio/news series-documentary for UWO Crime Statistics
  • Third place/radio newscast for the WRST 3 p.m. local newscast from May 2, 2018
  • Third place/TV feature story for Robotics Competition
  • Third place/social media for the Titan TV Instagram page

Ten UWO students attended the conference along with UW Oshkosh instructors Justine Stokes and Randall Davidson. Both led panels at the event and Stokes’ panel was co-led by UWO student Taylor Mueller, Titan TV’s station manager. Their presentation provided tips on how to produce special event programming.

UWO has won 142 WBA awards since the contest began in 2004.
