University of Wisconsin Oshkosh kinesiology department head Dan Schmidt is spending his summer gearing up for a 160-mile bike ride across Wisconsin in support of student scholarships.

The Schmidt Don’t Quit Scholarship Ride—sponsored by the Kinesiology Club—begins on Sept. 1 in La Crosse and ends on campus in time for the new school year.

The campus community is invited to run the last mile with Schmidt and join in a celebration at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3 at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Schmidt, who began work at UWO in fall 1997, said the idea to do a fundraising ride combines his personal enjoyment of biking with his commitment to supporting UW Oshkosh students.

He said he typically rides his bike four to five days per week to stay in shape and to enjoy the beauty of Wisconsin.

“I enjoy the solitude on the bike,” Schmidt said. “It offers the opportunity to recharge and center myself … it is a bit of a spiritual experience for me.”

Donations to the ride can be made online.
