WRST-FM at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh was recently honored in two national media competitions.

At the College Broadcasters annual convention in St. Louis, Missouri, WRST was honored in two production categories. The station took first place for best radio sportscast for an episode of the Monday afternoon talk program “The Sports Page.” The winning entry was from the day when Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy was fired. Hosts Nick Bode, an RTF major from Sun Prairie, and 2019 graduate Hunter Vaughn discussed the move and gave their analysis as to possible replacements.

Third place honors for best regularly scheduled radio entertainment program went to Gideon Patrick, an RTF junior from Oshkosh, and Max Fredrick, an RTF junior from Appleton, for their Saturday evening film discussion program “Script to Screen.” Both programs have recently become available as podcasts on major platforms. With these honors, WRST has now won 10 CBI awards.

The College Media Association also recently held its convention in Washington, D.C. In their Pinncale Awards competition, WRST took second place for best radio newscast. The newscast from Oct. 23, 2018 was produced and delivered by student assistant news director Emma Revai, a senior RTF major from Waupaca.

This newscast also was honored earlier by the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association and won WRST its first national award from Public Radio News Directors Inc. It was Revai’s second win in this competition category. WRST has now won nine CMA Pinnacle awards, including being named “Station of the Year” in 2012 and 2018.

WRST also participated in CMA’s Film and Audio Festival and came away with two additional awards. WRST student station manager Andrew Haese, an RTF junior from Jackson, took second place for best DJ/personality and RTF senior Dylon Klubertanz, of Franklin, took third place in the audio documentary category for his long-form piece profiling a local barber who is an ex-con. The piece, produced for the Advanced Radio Production class, also won honors from the National Broadcasting Society, Broadcast Education Association, Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and Milwaukee Press Club.

WRST is heard in the Oshkosh area at 90.3 on the FM dial and worldwide at wrst.org.
