An enterprising University of Wisconsin Oshkosh student landed work with several newspapers in her hometown after she left campus due to the coronavirus.

Marissa Chamberlin

Marissa Chamberlin’s family lives in St. Croix Falls, in the western part of Wisconsin. A photography and journalism student, she was fortunate that there are four newspapers in Polk County and her family lives close to their offices.

“I called them to see if I could take some photos for them,” she said. “I told them I am minoring in journalism. One of the newspapers asked if I had any article ideas to share or write about.”

Chamberlin aspires to someday work for a travel magazine.

She is majoring in art, with an emphasis in photography, and is working on a minor in multimedia journalism. In fall, she will be starting her fourth year.

Chamberlin said she is more comfortable with photography and believes she can improve a story with her photos.

She added that her time at home has been a lot different from her life in the residence halls at UWO.

“I live on the west side of the state,” she said. “When we can see people again, it will be hard for me to see them as I am so far away. I was in four clubs at UWO. I went from having lots of social contact through my clubs to not much besides family.”
