Communication studies senior Gabrielle Newman was one of five University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students who recently participated in the 2020 Student Research and Innovation Showcase and placed third in the competition held as part of the WiSys Spark Symposium Virtual Series.

At the event, sponsored by Boyle Fredrickson, students shared interesting and varied research projects and innovations. Newman, of Oshkosh, earned a $250 prize for her presentation “Reframing Womanhood: A Rhetorical Analysis of Ada James’ ‘The Womanly Woman.’”

“James offered a new perspective on womanhood and provided the foundation for what the future of femininity could mean,” Newman said of the prominent Wisconsin suffragist.

Newman’s faculty adviser is UW Oshkosh communication professor Carmen Heider.

“Congratulations to all the participants for their research as well as their ability to adapt to this new virtual format,” said WiSys President Arjun Sanga. “UW regional comprehensive institutions are known for excellence in undergraduate research and the winners represent the best and brightest Wisconsin has to offer.”

  • Senior music major Molly Hennig, of New Ulm, Minnesota, “Bringing Frauenliebe und Leben into Present-Day Performances.”
  • Senior chemistry major Dorothy Mitchell, of Phoenix, Illinois, “Development of a Polymer Recycling Experiment for the Undergraduate Laboratory.”
  • Senior psychology major Karely Rodriguez Jimenez, of Rice Lake, “Encoding and Test Interaction in the DRM Paradigm.”
  • Senior psychology major Sydney Schmidt, of Neenah,“Factors Supporting Outcomes of Students with ASD at UWO.”

WiSys was established in 2000 and is an independent nonprofit-supporting organization for the UW System. The strong partnership between WiSys and the UW System helps the UW campuses fulfill their roles as 21st century leaders in research, discovery and innovation.
