University of Wisconsin Oshkosh radio TV film professor Caryn Murphy will facilitate an online conversation tonight with some of the creative minds behind the new Netflix documentary Disclosure, including director Sam Feder and executive producer and “Orange is the New Black” star Laverne Cox.

Disclosure, released on the streaming service in June, examines the last century of transgender representation in film and television. It features leading trans thinkers and creatives like Cox, Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton and Chaz Bono and revisists popular films like Dog Day Afternoon, The Crying Game and Boys Don’t Cry.

The discussion begins at 7:30 p.m. and will livestream from the film’s official Facebook page. Murphy will be joined by Feder, Cox and Brian Michael Smith, an actor and Disclosure consultant.

Murphy got involved because a former student of hers at UW-Madison, Bryce Kirchoff, is working with the Disclosure team on marketing and impact campaign strategies. Kirchoff, who graduated in 2007 and now lives in Los Angeles, thought of Murphy when this opportunity developed.

“I thought of professor Murphy immediately because she instructed (a 300-level communication and arts class) when I was a student and I remember so much from that class,” he said. “She was the first person to open my eyes to the critical study of television, which is at the heart of Disclosure. She taught me what representation in media is and why it matters.”

Murphy said the conversation tonight is aimed at media educators and will be  focused on the educational uses of the documentary and discussing representations in the classroom.
