The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will be making and celebrating history in 2021.

Although alumni, students, faculty and staff continue to deal with the impact of the global pandemic, we’re not letting that stop us from honoring our rich 150-year history.

Since its inception as a teacher-training school in 1871, UWO’s dedication to quality and innovative higher education has been a hallmark of our success as a premier comprehensive institution. Over the decades, the institution’s name has changed several times as the educational focus expanded to meet the needs of students in northeastern Wisconsin and beyond.

“Throughout history, UW Oshkosh has weathered multiple storms—from fires to recessions and other rough spots,” said Lynn Kleman, UWO’s Sesquicentennial Committee chair and interim associate vice chancellor for development.
We’re living through one of those times now.

Since COVID-19 first impacted our three campuses in spring 2020, UWO has undergone dramatic changes, including a pivot to increased online courses, the addition of a virus testing center and implementation of health and safety measures and practices.

“We’re living through history, and we continue to be here for our students and alumni. We know Titans are resilient,” Kleman said. “We’re excited to celebrate our 150th year of providing top-notch education to build our region’s future leaders, teachers, researchers and healthcare workers.”

A sampling of upcoming special sesquicentennial activities includes an audio walking tour, a Humans of UW Oshkosh project, a community picnic to mark the official first-day anniversary, a UWO 150th fundraising campaign and a black-tie Black and Gold Ball.

While many of the 150th events are set to take place in fall 2021, Kleman said the University community should look for signs of celebration throughout the whole year. The sesquicentennial spirit will be infused into everything from move-in for students, our Opening Day convocation, commencement ceremonies, Golden Titan Reunion and, of course, Homecoming.

“I’m humbled to be part of sharing this very special year with our alumni, donors and friends,” she said.
